Moving our body!

This Didactic Unit is addressed to the following class group:
- Subject: Science.
- Level: First Cycle, 2nd year of Primary Education.
- Age: 7-8 years- old.
- Timing: 9 sessions (3 weeks).
- Location: I am going to develop this Didactic Unit in the classroom although one of these nine sessions is going to be done in the Althia classroom.
- Description: we are going to learn new vocabulary about the parts of the body. We will also reflect about the importance of the healthcare eating healthy food and practicing sports. We will know who Alexander Fleming is.

Its Learning outcomes are:

1. To know parts of the body.
2. To know the skeleton and its mains bones.
3. To know the main joints.
4. To know the function of our muscles.
5. To distinguish the main internal organs.
6. To assess the importance of the healthcare.
7. To know some important aspects about Alexander Fleming.

- Development of the sessions
FIRST SESSION

- To learn the new vocabulary, I will propose an oral and class group activity. It consists of guessing the picture which is missing. To do that, I will give them a piece of paper with some pictures (toes, eyes, face, ears, fingers, feet hands, body, legs, head, mouth and nose). Using the right flashcard I will say all of them but only one will be omitted. Pupils have to guess the word I do not say.

- The teacher will explain pupils the main theory of the unit (the skeleton and joints) and they will listen to it. To attract their attention, the teacher will use videos. He will also use change the voice to emphasize the vocabulary they have to learn. He also is going to make use of mimic and visual support like a skeleton to help them to understand it.

- We are going to continue learning the new vocabulary playing with “The Funny Blanket”. To carry out this activity, I will make two groups (A and B). Then, I will say aloud one of the words of the new vocabulary and two pupils of the different groups will have to touch the picture I will pronounce. It will be in the blanket. It will win the pupil who finds it before. We will continue doing that until all pupils participate.

SECOND SESSION
- All the class is going to listen to and sing a song and they will do the actions.
A way in which we are going to sing the song is the following one:
  • Firstly, we will make a semi-circle. Then, I will explain that I am going to conduct them as they sing the song. I will demonstrate that they should sing loudly when I raise my hands and quietly when I lower them. I will conduct the class as a choir, singing with them at first and raising and lowering my voice as I move my hands.

- Listening activities (Individually):
o   One of these activities will consist of circling the correct option according to they hear.
THIRTH SESSION
- The teacher will continue explaining pupils the main theory of the unit (heart, liver, lungs, intestines…) and they will listen to it. To attract their attention, the teacher will use videos. He will also use change the voice to emphasize the vocabulary they have to learn.
- Written activities (Individually):
o   Write parts of the body.
o   Another written activity will consist of describing the picture of the above exercise.
FOURTH SESSION
TALKING ABOUT ALEXANDER FLEMING…
- Now, in groups of five it is time to create our “Science Corner”. To do that, we are going to need continuous listing paper. During some weeks, our “Science Corner” is going to be called “Alexander Fleming”. Students will look for information about him and they will create a big mural.

FIFTH SESSION
- The teacher will talk about healthy habits. To attract pupils´ attention, the teacher will use videos. He will also use change the voice to emphasize the vocabulary they have to learn.
- Listening activity (Individually):
o   This activity will consist of listening to and circling the correct picture.
- THE KNOWLEDGE RACE GAME: I will make 4 groups of 5 or 6. I will assign a counter to each group or student participating in the game. I will ask them to throw the dice and the student who gets the highest number will begin the game. Once the first player has thrown the dice and landed on a square, an assistant picks up a card, reads the question aloud for the players to answer it. They will try to get a bus, a taxi, a phone box or a police man answering questions in a correct way. The student/s who first get/s all the objects win/s the game. All questions are about our body and healthy habits.

SIXTH SESSION
- We will play with the “musical ball”.  To put in practice this game all the group is going to participate. We are going to sit in a circle. I will play music and children will pass the ball clockwise round the circle. Then I will pause the music and children with the ball will stand up and talk about the parts of the body. For instance: I´ve got blue eyes and big ears…. They will continue asking each other.
- Doing another class group and oral activity called “IS IT…?” we are going to continue learning the main vocabulary of the unit. The way in which we are going to carry out this activity is:
  • Without seeing anything, I will select a flashcard (it may be a picture or a written word) and I will show them. I will try to guess what is written asking them Is it… head, trunk, limbs, skeleton, joints, muscles, heart, liver, lungs, intestines…?
- Individual writing activity: pupils have to find four differences between two pictures about the body and write about them.

SEVENTH SESSION
- Individually, they are going to complete a reinforcement worksheet and follow-up activities about everything they have studied along the unit.

EIGHTH SESSION
- Using our digital board or our computer room we are going to visit some websites and all of us will learn together. These resources will help us to introduce and reinforce contents in a playful and attractive way.

NINTH SESSION
- I will give them a self-assess worksheet which they have to complete individually.
- I will give an evaluation test to check what each one has been able to learn along this Unit.
